Artist Zeek Mathias explores questions of identity, culture, and belonging through varied media reflecting on the lives of the people of Ganvie lake village in Benin, Africa. As generations grow up further removed from their ancestral roots, what role does tradition play in defining oneself? Is there an obligation to maintain cultural practices and connections to one’s origins? Or is identity shaped more by one’s immediate surroundings and experiences in a new land? The goal is to promote cross-cultural understanding and spotlight how our histories shape us over generations.
